GTA 6 map is twice the size of GTA 5, 80 hours to beat

GTA 6 map is twice the size of GTA 5, 80 hours to beat

Rockstar has finally pulled back the curtain on some of the most anticipated details about GTA 6, and the numbers are pretty wild. The upcoming open world game will feature a map that’s twice as large as GTA 5’s, and you’re looking at roughly 80 hours to see the story through to the end.

A map that fits two Los Santos inside

When Rockstar says the GTA 6 map is twice the size of GTA 5, they’re talking about a massive upgrade in scale. For context, GTA 5’s map was already one of the biggest open worlds in gaming when it launched, combining the sprawling city of Los Santos with the surrounding countryside, mountains, and coastline. Now imagine fitting two of those entire maps into one game.

This makes sense given what we’ve seen from the trailers. GTA 6 is set in Vice City and its surrounding areas, which appear to include not just the neon-lit urban sprawl but also the Everglades-inspired wetlands, beaches, and smaller towns scattered around the state. It’s looking like Rockstar’s take on Florida will give players a ton of ground to cover.

80 hours for the main story

As for how long it’ll take to beat GTA 6, Rockstar is estimating around 80 hours for the main story. That’s significantly longer than GTA 5, which took most players between 30 and 35 hours to finish the campaign if they stuck to the critical path.

Of course, anyone who’s played a Rockstar game knows that the main story is just the beginning. Side missions, collectibles, random encounters, minigames, and just messing around in the open world can easily double or triple that playtime. If you’re the type who likes to see and do everything, you’re probably looking at well over 150 hours of content, if not more.

What this means for players

A map this size and a story this long signal that Rockstar is going all in on GTA 6. They’ve had over a decade since GTA 5 launched to plan, build, and refine this game, and it sounds like they’re using every bit of that time to create something truly massive in scope.

The doubled map size should translate to more variety in environments, more room for activities, and hopefully more reasons to explore every corner of the world. With modern hardware powering the game, we should also see denser cities, more detailed interiors, and a level of immersion that wasn’t possible back when GTA 5 first came out.

The 80-hour story length is also interesting because it suggests Rockstar is committed to a meatier narrative this time around. GTA 6 will feature two protagonists, Lucia and her partner, and their story apparently has enough depth and missions to keep you busy for a good long while.

Still waiting on a release date

While these new details are exciting, Rockstar still hasn’t locked down a specific release date beyond a general 2026 window. We’re already in the second half of the year, so unless they announce something soon, there’s a real chance we might be waiting until 2027 to actually play this thing.

Still, knowing that the game is shaping up to be this ambitious makes the wait a little easier to bear. If you want to stay on top of the latest GTA 6 news as it drops, keep an eye on our news section 🎮
